- VIN FIZ WRIGHT BROTHERS EX In 1911, Calbraith “Cal” Rodgers was the first person to fly the United States coast-to-coast. Famed publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst offered a $50,000 prize for the first transcontinental flight in thirty days or less Rodgers’ took him up on his offer, and he would fly his Wright Brothers EX airplane named the VIN FIZ after his sponsor’s grape soda drink. His Wright Brothers plane was a flying billboard with “VIN FIZ-THE IDEAL GRAPE DRINK” painted on the under-wing. Roders tossed out printed cards promoting the grape drink. The cards read: “GREETINGS FROM THE SKY-RODGERS IN THE VIN FIZ FLYER-from New York to Los Angeles…A piece of authentic and flown fabric from the VIN FIZ WRIGHT BROTHERS EX airplane is mounted on the dial between the 7 and 8 positions. The Smithsonian Institution restored this aircraft. The fabric removed during that restoration is certified to be the original fabric.
